The Greenhouse Gas Inventory aims to obtain valid and comparable data to help to establish and monitor strategies to reduce those gases.

One of the goals of the Basque Sustainable Development Strategy 2002-2020 is to limit the emission of gases harmful to the atmosphere and thus help to meet the target set in the Kyoto Protocol.

In 2002, the first greenhouse gas inventory of the Basque Country was carried out and covered the period 1990-200.  Annual inventories have been conducted since then.
