From the Plains to the valleys of Álava: A meeting ground

Tuesta (Valdegovía)

Church of Ntra. Sra. de la Asunción

In Tuesta, the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción appears as the most notable work in the area. It offers late Romanesque characteristics with early gothic touches. It was built in the Middle Ages, in the 13th century.

The archivolts of the main entrance, reflecting the iconography of the time, offer a broad variety of geometric, vegetable, animal and human subjects. Tuesta, with its mixed hotchpotch of symbolic animals and figures constitutes the richest set of historical archivolts in Araba.

In terms of artistic value, outstanding features are the main altarpiece, in Renaissance-style, dating from the late 16th century and gilded between 1650 and 1670, later removed from the main apse to a side chapel, and the font, which is mediaeval.
