From the Plains to the valleys of Álava: A meeting ground

Mendoza (Vitoria-Gaseteiz)

Tower of Mendoza Within the Municipality of Vitoria-Gasteiz, in the area called Mendoza, we find a walled area, almost quadrangular in shape. At the centre lies the tower house of the Mendozas, an influential and powerful family who, in the 14th century, controlled one of the most important entrance points to Vitoria. Both the Tower and the walls are in one of the areas of greatest strategic value in Araba. The walls are made of limestone, over 25 metres long, 5 metres high and 1.70 metres thick. There are 4 turrets measuring nearly three metres in diameter; their objective was to defend the walled area and prevent invaders from entering.
