The eastern Plains (Llanada oriental): Step by step

Monasterio de Estíbaliz/Estibalizko Monasterioa (Vitoria-Gasteiz)

Sanctuary of Estíbaliz

The sanctuary of Estibaliz, Romanesque in style and dating from the 12th century, is dedicated to Nuestra Señora de Estibaliz, patron saint of the Araba Plains. The temple is perched on a hill overlooking the locality of Argandoña. Despite successive reforms, it constitutes one of the most significant Romanesque art monuments in Araba. This is a Romanesque model of a church with early gothic elements. It has a Latin cross layout with a wide transept, three asymmetric and independent chapels, and a nave divided into three sections. The transept dates from the 13th century and is covered with a lancet arch vault. Due to its sculptural decoration, the most outstanding element is the main door, which opens on the Southern side close to the transept.
