Mikel Díez Sarasola
Department Assistant Lecturer in the Constitutional Law Area of the University of the Basque Country (EHU/UPV).
He began his university career in 2020 as a substitute lecturer in the Department of Public Law and Historical-Legal Science and Political Thought at the University of the Basque Country (EHU/UPV). Since March 2022 he has been department assistant lecturer in the Constitutional Law Area, teaching Constitutional Law III in the Faculty of Law in Leioa (Bizkaia), as well as courses in Constitution and Globalisation (Faculty of Communication and Social Science), Ethics and Law in Bioscience (Faculty of Science) and Global Constitutionalism (master's degree in International Affairs in the Faculty of Communication and Social Science). He lectures in Spanish, English and Basque. He also works as a visiting lecturer at the University of Bologna (Italy), on the module Rule of Law: Foundations and Applications.
His academic training includes a bachelor's degree in Law from the UPV/EHU Faculty of Law in Donostia-San Sebastián, a master's degree in Law from the University of California in Berkeley thanks to Fulbright scholarship and a Doctorate in International Affairs from the UPV/EHU supervised by Noe Cornago and UC Berkeley professor Talha Syed, focusing on the global system of intellectual property and pharmaceutical patents.
His research areas focus on the study of constitutional theory, global constitutionalism and the application of constitutionalism to supranational frameworks and the EU, the rule of law and individual rights, in particular cultural rights and rights related to environmental protection. He is a member of the research group on Multilevel Governance: Challenges and Opportunities after the pandemic crisis (PID2021-28599NBI00), within the framework of which he had a research stay at NYU (New York) from February to July 2023. He was also selected in the Call for Papers for EuConst Symposium for Young Scholars by the European Constitutional Law Review with the manuscript EU Mediation for the Renewal of Spanish Council of the Judiciary within a Multilevel Constitutional System: A New Constitutional Function of the EC under article 2 TEU? At the University of Maastricht June 2024. Finally, he has been a member of the Editorial Council of the journal Cuestiones de Pluralismo de la Fundación Pública Pluralismo y Convivencia since June 2024.
Previous to his academic career, he was Director of Development Cooperation at the Gipuzkoa provincial authority between June 2019 and September 2020, Director of Culture at Gipuzkoa Provincial Authority. February 2019 to June 2019. Head of the Area of Culture, Youth and Sports, Tourism and Cooperation at Gipuzkoa Provincial Authority. June 2015 to January 2019 and practising lawyer at the Mondragón group (2005-2015) and Garrigues (2000-2005). Lawyer, member of the Barcelona Bar Association.
