Durangesado and Arratia: The power of beauty and magic

The Necropolis of Argiñeta

Necropolis of Argiñeta

This site can be found inside and on the land surrounding the small church of San Adrián, Renaissance in style and built on the site of a previous church. Its layout is rectangular with a single nave built in sandstone masonry. The interior has a floor made from boulders. The sepulchres and funeral steles are arranged artificially to make up a rectangle. Today there are twenty sepulchres, one double, two isolated lids without any coffin and five steles. Argiñeta is one of the most interesting mediaeval sites in the territory as it shows remains of the first Early Middle Ages organisation in Bizkaia, as well as clear signs of Christianity. Judging by the remains, the settlement was occupied between the 9th and 12th centuries.
