Bolíbar lies close to Mount Oiz and to the south of the
Collegiate Church of
Zenarruza, being linked to this monument by a
cobbled path that was restored at the end of the 18th century.
There are three houses linked to the ancestors of the liberator Simón Bolívar: the Bolívar palace, of which only a window remains, Remetería mayor and Remetería menor, currently used as a Museum.
The Church of Santo Tomas dates from the 10th century although it was rebuilt in the 12th and 13th centuries. There is a chapel in its portico with an image of Nuestra Señora de Coromoto, the patron saint of Venezuela. As regards the Collegiate Church of Zenarruza, this is a gothic church from the 16th century. Its main altarpiece is a magnificent example of Renaissance altarpiece work in Bizkaia, and is outstanding due to its mixed typology combining painting and sculpture, making it unique amongst altarpieces in Bizkaia from that period. We should also point out the interesting gothic images of the Virgin Mary and the harmonious combination with the baroque pew that surrounds the altarpiece.
