Ondarroa

Bridge of stone

Ondarroa is the last town in Bizkaia before entering Gipuzkoa. It was founded as a town in 1327 by the Lady of Bizkaia, Dña. María Díaz de Haro and in 1794 it was devastated by fire.

This town is home to the Likona Tower, a post-mediaeval building with a rectangular layout and cubic volume. Its foundry, from the 18th century, and the interior distribution of its floors are in the baroque style. There is documented evidence of this tower-house from the year 1510. Before that date it is mentioned indirectly, as references are made to figures from the Likona family but without any mention of the existence of the Tower.

The original Tower was destroyed in 1463 by a fire. The original hip roof was replaced by a more modern gable roof.
