Bermeo

Small Church of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

D. Diego López de Haro, Lord of Bizkaia, granted Bermeo the title of town in 1239.

Several Kings of Castile confirmed the Charters and Privileges of the town in the Church of Santa Eufemia. In 1476, Fernando el Católico conferred upon Bermeo the title of Capital of Bizkaia, a title it held until 1602, the year in which it was taken away.

The small church of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is located on a coastal promontory. It has a rectangular layout and a polygonal apse. It is worked in masonry, with a gable roof and it has a stonework steeple. The Gaztelugatxe Rock is the westernmost point of the municipality of Bermeo, which borders Bakio. A series of documented events occurred here that lead us to classify the area as being of archaeological interest. The monastery appears in documents for the first time in 1503, and there are legends relating it to the Templars.
