Goierri region of Gipuzkoa: valley of iron

Legazpi

Foundry of Mirandaola

The history of the Mirandaola Ironworks in Legazpi dates back over four centuries, as it appears in documentation from the year 1400 onwards. It operated until the start of the last century, in fact it was one of the last ironworks to close and one of the few that managed to survive the crisis suffered by ironworks in the 16th and 17th centuries. Located in the centre of the Mirandaola park, the ironworks, today, has been restored and regularly starts up activity to show the transformation of iron as carried out by the blacksmiths, in a traditional way, in the 14th century. The Mirandaola theme park allows visitors to learn about the development of iron-making that has taken place in Legazpi, from archaeological remains to modern industry.
