Juan José Álvarez Rubio

Juan José Álvarez Rubio (Zumaia, 1964) is Professor of Private International Law at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). He graduated with a Special Degree Prize, and his doctoral thesis received the Special Doctorate Prize.

He is Secretary of GLOBERNANCE (Institute for Democratic Governance) and was General Secretary of the Basque Council of the European Movement (EUROBASK/CVME). Since 2007, he has been an expert for the European Commission in the areas of civil justice, borders, data protection and security. He is Principal Researcher at the eAtlantic Foundation and Vice-President of Jakiunde.

He is the author of ten monographs and more than one hundred scientific publications. He also works as a lawyer and business consultant, specialising in compliance and international contracting. He is an Advisor to the OTUA Group, a member of the Board of Trustees of the UNED Bergara Foundation, an Independent Board Member of LABORAL KUTXA and a member of the Innobasque Board of Directors.

He is Director of the University/Business Chair established by CONFEBASK and the universities of the Basque university system (UPV/EHU, Deusto and Mondragon University). He is also a member of the commercial arbitration panel of the Arbitration Court of the Gipuzkoa Chamber of Commerce.

His awards include the National End-of-Degree Prize, the Eusko Ikaskuntza-Laboral Kutxa Prize for Humanities, Culture, Arts and Social Sciences (2015) and the Iñaki Gabilondo Prize for Communication and Humanities (2025).
