From Pamplona to Estella: beyond the city walls

The Church of Santa María de Eunate

The strange and mysterious Romanesque church of Eunate stands totally alone in the countryside. It is octagonal in shape, with a small apse joining the eastern wall and a bell-tower. It is surrounded by a gallery with arcades, and the discovery of bones nearby suggests that it may have been a funeral chapel designed for burying the bodies of pilgrims that died in a neighbouring hospital.
