The very old Emparan Tower dates back to 1320. Enrique IV ordered for its top part to be demolished. In 1535 it was rebuilt, although it did not acquire its current appearance until 1750, i.e. that of a rectangular gothic house in three sections: a central square section and two side sections. The original tower, with numerous baroque elements added later, was a palace and is today a cultural centre.
The Antxieta Tower is a gothic building, from the 15th century, rectangular in shape with a series of additions and alterations from different eras. Built using stonework, masonry and ashlar work, this tower was the birthplace of Joanes de Anchieta, chapel master and precentor of the Catholic Monarchs. A descendant of the same lineage is the sculptor Juan de Anchieta, a notable Renaissance artist.
In the 16th century this Azpeitia native, a famous musician, ordered the building of the Palace of Anchieta, a magnificent showpiece of Mudejar art.
