Zarautz

Palace of Narros

The town of Zarautz, founded in the 13th century, maintained its urban pattern with successive extensions until the last century. From this moment onwards it went through a phase of expansion of a spa-town type.

The only building still standing that witnessed the birth of the town is the Palace of Narros, the town's main monument due to its historical links, as it is built over the tower of the Zarauz, a family whose presence here appears to predate the founding of the town. This 16th century Renaissance style palace is built of sandstone, except for the coat of arms made of limestone. The main façade, whose mouldings include a sundial, faces an English style garden designed in the 19th century. It was the summer residence of Isabel II.

The Luzea Tower of Zarautz is the best example of gothic civil architecture in Gipuzkoa. Built in stone, it has four storeys, with a hip roof and a stonework finish. The main façade is the most interesting, being well proportioned and unique. On the ground floor it has an access via a lancet and wedge-stone arch. Restoration work has respected the monument's interior, which conserves valuable 16th century paintings.
