Amurrio Ferrocarril y Equipos S.A. has its origins in Bilbao in 1880, when it was founded under the name of Mariano de Corral Railway Equipment Company, which soon after underwent a period of great expansion. In 1929, it moved to bigger and better facilities in Amurrio (Álava), and changed its name to Talleres Amurrio S.A., a company that participated in Spain's main railway projects throughout the twentieth century.
Early in 1995, in order to promote its presence in the railway sector worldwide, the company turned into AMURRIO FERROCARRIL Y EQUIPOS S.A., which gathered all the experience of its predecessor and reinforced its railway equipment design and manufacturing projection. In this new stage, the company has made a great economic and technological effort, creating a new state-of-the-art manganese steel casting and machining line, so as to meet clients' current and future needs.
AMURRIO FERROCARRIL Y EQUIPOS is an approved supplier of Spanish railway, underground, tram and high-speed authorities, as well as of major companies in Europe, North Africa, Middle East, Asia and South America. With an export percentage of 40% in railway equipment, its range of products has been present in more than 43 countries, for the last five years. Its main clients (it currently has more than 150 regular clients) include the Rail TracK in the United Kingdom, SNCB in Belgium, Caminhos de Ferro in Portugal, DSB BANE in Denmark, R.A.T.P and SNCF in France, O.N.C.F. in Morocco, the Port & Railways Authority in Israel, Medellín Underground, in Colombia, etc.

Some of these facilities, which were opened recently, are amongst the best in the world.
Currently, the company has an annual output capacity of more than 300 sidings and 3,500 crossings and an annual turnover of 38 million euros.
The company's quality system is fully described in the Quality Manual and extended in the Specific Procedure Manual, procedures which are described in accordance with ISO 9.000-2000, issued by the Spanish Association for Standardisation and Certification (AENOR), as well as ISO 9.000 EQNET. Product:
Manganese Steel Cast Monobloc Crossings
Interchanges are an extremely complex piece of fixed railway equipment that require high precision in their design, manufacturing and installation. Manganese steel crossings are the key part in this equipment to be able to bear the heavy loads they are subjected to.
Crossings manufactured by Amurrio Ferrocarril have been present in more than 43 countries for the past ten years, with more than 150 regular clients.
Manganese steel is characterised by increasing the hardness of the crossing when subjected to strong stressing while keeping the same degree of flexibility.
Existing fixed manganese steel cast monobloc crossings offer the client an absolute guarantee of reliability and behaviour on the track, allowing trains to operate at high speeds and obtaining a great performance due to its long working life. Similarly, manganese steel moveable-point crossings offer the same guarantees but allow for even higher speeds and significantly absorbing sounds and vibration.
Fixed crossings are made of 12/14% manganese steel with antennas welded from the track to them by means of a special welding technique with stainless intermediate parts.
Moveable-point crossings are made with a manganese steel cradle, with wing rails welded by means of the same procedure as fixed crossings. The moveable point, formed by the track point and counterpoint which are assembled by means of heavy-duty screws, is linked to the wing rails by elastic bushings. The moveable point slides on special anti-wear nickel-chromium plates.
