Sociolinguistic areas are defined according to the percentage of Basque speakers in each municipality. Based on this percentage, four areas are distinguished: 1st Area: municipalities with less than 33% of Basque speakers. 2nd Area: municipalities between 33% and 49.9% of Basque speakers. 3rd Area: municipalities between 50% and 79.9% of Basque speakers. 4th Area: municipalities with 80% or more of Basque speakers.
