London, 1715, by Patri Urkizu, consists of the publication in two volumes of the hitherto unpublished Dictionarium latino-cantabricum by Pierre D¿Urte of Donibane Lohizune (St. Jean-de-Luz). The first volume (492 pages) presents a study of the dictionary. The second (638 pages) volume consists of a transcription of the 2457-page original manuscript of the dictionary.
The dictionary was published (Mundaiz, Donostia 1989) with a preface by Patxi Altuna. The first part brings to light new information about the life and times of Pierre D¿Urte, including his relationship with the linguists of his time in London. D¿Urte¿s writings are also covered; these include a translation of part of the Bible (Ethorkia and Ilkhitzea [Genesis and Exodus], published in 1894 under the editorship of Ll. Thomas) and Grammaire Cantabrique Basque (edited by W. Webster, 1900). In addition, the Dictionarium is subjected to a detailed study focusing in particularly on the wealth of its semantic fields. The lexicon of his Basque works is presented in a new Basque-French-Spanish-Latin dictionary. Appendices list proper names, verb forms and most frequent words, as well as a bibliography of published and manuscript dictionaries up to the time of Azkue, and indices of places and people mentioned.
