Gorputza Projet. Interview with Ion Prieto Estala in Charge of the Communication Departament of Noventa Grados

Noventa GradosThe project Gorputza started off last month of April with remarkable success. Who is behind this initiative?

The project Gorputza is the result of the collaboration between two entities: liquiDocs and Noventa Grados.

liquid Docs is a research and creation think-tank within the field of interdisciplinary practices developing from and around the body, time and space, and whose objective is to spread contemporary creation and to present new production and design processes of the most recent artistic expressions.

On the other hand, Noventa Grados is a very well known space in Donostia that opened in 2005 and for four years has been devoted to promote cultural activities in the city and in the outskirts, supporting new initiatives and artistic currents that have something to express or to tell.  In this space hairdressing services and sale of accessories like bags, jewellery, cosmetics or books are combined with exhibitions, video projections and installations. However, Noventa Grados cannot be understood only as a hairdressing saloon where, besides art exhibitions, clothes, accessories, music or books are sold, its conceptualization goes beyond that; it is a cross-disciplinary space that aims at searching for innovation in creation.

What does the Gorputza Project entail?

It is an initiative to be developed during 12 months in which Noventa Grados will act as a container of different events and which will host, throughout that period of time, 10 events and 10 exhibitions related to art, expression or feeling: photography, animation, dance, fashion, illustration, poetry, performance, video-creation, installation, graphic, sound…a great many of artistic disciplines which will try to take Gorputza close to anybody who may come by Noventa Grados. In addition to all these activities, presentations, theatrical improvisations and small concerts will be also offered.

To begin with the project takes in the work of artists of Donostia and the outskirts, however we foresee to bring people from abroad and to give it a more international dimension and to move to Euskal Herria all the character that LiquidDocs has.

Le Coq Sportif sponsors the project, Patio Espacio de Comunicación will sponsor everything related to image and to visual production, and we also have the contribution of Korova in charge of the musical content and multimedia section; Noticias de Gipuzkoa will be the official media press of the project, and Aux Magazine will be the main media partner.

Which activities have been developed up to now and which other ones have been scheduled for the near future?

By means of each artist’s content, from Gorputza’s opening to the closure, several events will be held, which will have their respective exhibitions. The project started with the graphic and editorial process of the international book magazine liquidDocs-00: Sonia Gómez, which has been extended until May. Right through the month of June people have attended to the exhibition Une Étrange Affaire developed by Middle Classe, an artistic collective composed by artists of Baiona, Thierry Saldou and Laurent Hiriart; they both make a team and using different tools they generate infinite activities related to illustration, video-art, graffiti, photography and 3D animation. Now in July a new installation has been presented: DispositivoMóvil3NG, created by liquidDocs for Noventa Grados; a structure-container-furniture, which is strongly connected to time, the body and virtual space.

The events to be held in the future are the following:

  • September 17th: Itxaso Díaz will organize from Bilbao Sinpatrón, Ätankontu, Higinia Garay, malomuymalo, and the Miedo y Moda exhibition.
  • October 2nd: Ainize Txopitea, graphic designer and visual poet, will exhibit her collages in which visual art, new technologies and language are mixed.
  • November 26th: Donostia’s prize-winning artist Jon Cazenave will exhibit his photography in black and white.
  • January 14th 2010: Exhibition of Donostia’s fashion designer Igor Alustiza’s creations.
  • February 25th 2010: Fernando Gutiérrez from Asturias will exhibit his vision of Gorputza by means of a graphic intervention in the space.
  • April 2nd 20010: international public call CP1Gorputza09 to search for documents, memory and traces of the body in its spontaneous state, live, from which it will rise the exhibition that will close the project.

To conclude, the content generated will be part of the liquidDocs’ book-magazines and at the end of the project a DVD will be edited with the best works presented, as part of liquidDocs’ publications.
