25 November, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November, the Basque Youth Observatory will be publishing data provided by Emakunde and the Department of Security of the Basque Government.
According to these data, which list the number of women and the number of cases of violence against women officially registered by the Basque police, 4419 women were victims of violence against women in the Basque Country in 2018. Of these, 1325 were women between the ages of 15 and 29.
The evolution of this register reveals that, in 2019, most of the women reporting male violence were aged 15 to 29.

The rates of female victims of gender-based violence, calculated per 1000 women in each age group, reveal significant differences between the 15-29 age group and women aged 30 or over (9.2 ‰ and 3.7 ‰ respectively). The higher rate among young women is not necessarily due to higher rates of violence against them, but because their level of tolerance is much lower, thanks to the greater empowerment of young women.

The most frequent type of violence against women, both among the group of young women and women over the age of 30, is violence perpetrated by a partner or former partner. 935 women aged 15 to 29 reported this type of male violence in 2019. By age groups, we find that 169 women in the youngest group (15 to 19) reported this type of violence; 344 women in the 20 to 24 age group; and 422 in the 25 to 29 age group.

In 2019, domestic violence (except violence perpetrated by partners or former partners) was reported by 179 women between the ages of 15 and 29 and by 720 people over the age of 30.

Violence against women's sexual freedom is the type of violence in which the figures are closest between young women complainants and women complainants over the age of 30. In the younger group, 211 women reported episodes of violence against their sexual freedom (115 among women aged 15-19, 59 among women aged 20-24, and 37 among women aged 25-29). On the other hand, 211 women over the age of 30 reported crimes against their sexual freedom.
