From the age of 17, most young people have sex

15.2% of young people with sexual experience state they have had high-risk sex over the last year

The Basque Youth Observatory has conducted a survey in which it asked 1,500 young people aged 15 to 29 whether they had had sexual relations at least once and, more specifically, whether they had had high-risk sex in the last year.

According to age, it was found that more than half of young people said they had had sex on at least one occasion after the age of 17.

Considering all young people aged 15 to 29, we find that 80.6% have had some sexual experience and that there are hardly any differences between young men and women: 81.0% of young men say they have had sex and 80.2% young women state the same.

How many of these young people with sexual experience say they have had high-risk sex in the last year?

15.2% of young people with sexual experience say they have had high-risk sex over the last year when asked: 13.2% had had sex that involved the risk of an unwanted pregnancy or contracting a sexually transmitted disease, and the remaining 2.0% said they had had sex that involved a risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease, but not of resulting in pregnancy.

High-risk sex is slightly more extended among young men than young women: 16.9% of young men with sexual experience state they have had high-risk sex in the last year, while 13.4% of young women with sexual experience say they have been involved in some high-risk sexual experience.

As age increases, the percentage of young people with sexual experience who say they have had high-risk sex decreases from 18.9% of young people with sexual experience under the age of 20 to 16.1% among people aged 20 to 24 and to 12.9% among people in the 25 to 29 age group.

These data come from a survey conducted by the Basque Youth Observatory in 2016 and are a preview of the "Basque Youth 2016” report, which belongs to the Basque Youth collection that the Basque Youth Observatory prepares every four years with a view to revealing the opinions and attitudes of young people under the age of 30.
