Abanto y Ciérvana-Abanto Zierbena

This small locality in Bizkaia province lies in a unique natural setting, just 20 minutes from Bilbao. There's no need to choose between seaside or mountains - Abanto y Zierbena has it all, making it the ideal place to enjoy a rest.

 

A mining past

The people visiting Abanto y Ciérvana will perceive immediately the singular landscape of the municipality consisting of the remains of mining infrastructures, where remarkable elements are the incinerator furnaces of the José and Lorenza mines, near Las Carreras neighbourhood, or Gerente Lake and an ancient mining well. Likewise, the peculiar landscape of La Barga, with its calcareous needles emerging from the earth at the Cristina mine, or the shell of the Ezequiela well, created for the Agruminsa's mine's ventilation and which is the only mining shell kept in Bizkaia, are worth visiting too.

 

Everyone willing to know the secrets of this activity should visit the Mining Museum of the Basque Country, sitting in Gallarta. One of its objectives is the protection of mining industry's heritage. In the museum we will find the peculiarities and characteristics of industrial remains spread all over the mining area. Likewise, we will have the opportunity to see the unique treasures kept in this area.
