A txakoli from Euskadi is chosen as the best white wine of 2024

An international competition has awarded the highest prize, the Gran Bacchus de Oro, to the Itsasmendi winery in Gernika. It has also been chosen as this year's best white wine for its txakoli Itsamendi Artizar. This is the second time that this winery has received the highest award, the first being in 2010. 

More than 1,900 wines from 18 different countries were entered for the competition, organised by the Spanish Tasters Union. 

Since its foundation in 1994, the winery, located in the Urdaibai Biosphere, has won 12 Silver Bacchus, five Gold Bacchus and two Grand Gold Bacchus. Its wines are distinguished by the area in which the winery is located, ‘a place known as Txirene, a crossroads between the Cantabrian holm oak grove and the acidophilic oak forest’. Gernika has become a strategic location for the production of one of the best wines.
