Start: Zarautz
Arrival: Zarautz
It’s one of the most impressive walks you can find in the Basque Country. All those who use it underline the contrast in colours: the green of a landscape full of trees and vegetation, with the blue of the sea and the grey of the rocks, without losing sight of the choppy Cantabrian Sea for a second. Also, it is a walk for everybody, which makes it an essential plan in your visit to the Basque Country with a dog. In addition, you can discover Getaria and Zarautz with a dog, enjoying a complete plan for a family day.
We begin at the Maritime Promenade of Zarautz, admiring its long and rough beach (highly prized by surfers all around the world), and head to the left (if we’re looking at the sea). In the background we can see the mountain known as “the Mouse of Getaria”
Access rules to the beach of Zarautz with a dog: your dog is welcome outside the bathing season with no timetable restrictions (from 13 October to the beginning of Easter). In bathing season, you can enjoy this beach with a dog from 9 at night to 6 in the morning.
The walk is well used by locals and is dotted with benches to rest and admire the views. You’ll be walking next to a road, but there is a separation wall for your safety.
Once we reach Getaria, we recommend you go for a wander around the village and regain your strength with a nice glass of txakoli accompanied by some Getaria anchovies.
Dog advice: If you’re staying in San Sebastián, you can reach Zarautz with a dog in the local train known as the “topo” (Euskotren). There’s a train every hour and the journey lasts approximately 30 minutes. One dog per passenger is allowed on Euskotren, with a lead and wearing a muzzle.
Duration of the route: 8km (return journey). 2 hours’ walk. Easy walking, ideal for all the family. When you get back (following the same route), you can fully enjoy the beach at Zarautz. You can also opt for a circular route, coming back over the mountains, following to route of whaling vantage points. In the case, the route is 10.6km and takes approximately 3 hours.
