Start: Bilbao / Apatamonasterio
Arrival: Mines of Errotabarri (Atxondo)
From Bilbao, getting out of the A-8 motorway (or road N-634) through Durango, head of the Duranguesado. Watch out for its cross, Kurutziaga Cross, and its amazing Town Hall. Heading on through the BI-632 road and once leaving Abadiño behind, we'll visit Apatamonasterio, where we'll leave the car.
Now we will continue as far as Elorrio, spectacular historic-artistic monumental set. Elorrio's splendour took place in the 17-18th Centuries. The village presents many emblazoned houses dating back to that period, houses as solid as elegants. If you'd like to verify it, it is said that one can count up to 69 coats of arms in the village. Do not miss out the hermitage and necropolis of San Adrián de Argiñeta on the outskirts of Elorrio.
We will get back to Apatamonasterio, one of the fused towns, along with Axpe and Arrazola, within the wide municipal area of Atxondo, in which we will immerse. We recommend parking the car in Apatamonasterio and going across the Green Route of Arrazola on foot. It is a road with very few slopes and surrounded by country houses, beautiful landscapes, and the river Arratia, following the ancient route of the railway that used to go as far as the mines of Errotabarri. The walk, including the return, lasts about two hours and a half. If walking is not suitable, the parallel road will also lead you to the area of Arrazola and Errotabarri.
Within what was a town in the past and the present neighbourhood of Arrazola, we can find what is probably the oldest country house in Bizkaia, named Ollargan. There is also a water mill dating back to the 18th century and the hermitage of San Roque. Behind the latter a curve will indicate the end of the Green Route of Arrazola, at the remainders of the ovens and miner population of the ancient iron and copper mines that stopped being profitable in 1946.
