Museum of the sea

Santurtzi is a locality whose history has always been linked to the sea. Its location on the left bank of the Abra estuary, home today to the port of Bilbao, made it a landmark among the fishing and seafaring towns and villages dotted along the Basque coastline.

The museum is housed in the former fishermen’s association, right on the harbour. It is a building that symbolises the seafaring history of Santurtzi, and has been fully refurbished. The subject matter of the Santurtzi Itsasoa visitor centre presents the link between Santurtzi and the sea in all its forms, both professional and social, cultural and recreational.

As it is a visitor centre, much of its work is aimed at providing experiences related to the sea and the life of its people. Thus, visitors can take part in themed guided tours, guided tastings, auctions, nautical workshops and more (some of them have to be booked in advance).

Santurtzi Itsasoa Museoa belongs to the Basque Coast Museums network, a set of cultural and educational spaces spread all along the coastal landscape of the Basque Country and home to a rich, outstanding seafaring heritage that is both protected and studied.
