Art & Culture
Cultural Heritage
The Murgia family was, from the Middle Ages, the most powerful clan in Astigarraga and its surroundings. Its palace, tower house in the beginning, rests over a hill that dominates the basin of River Urumea.
Murgia Palace is a remarkable construction of rectangular plan consisting of a ground floor and two floors covered with a hipped roof. It still keeps most part of the old ahslar wall with joints. The building caught fire in the 16th and 19th centuries due to several conflicts that devastated the country and had to be restored many times.
It was restored for the last time by the end of the previous century. Wooden vantage points of Gothic style attached at the sides, the unusual imperial staircases and the gardens preceding also underwent restoration works. The coats of arms of Murgia family is displayed over the main entrance.
It is home to a historical archive and a library of great value.
