Memorial to José María Martínez de las Rivas

The sculpture is a memorial to the businessman José María Martínez de la Rivas, a key figure in Bizkaia's industrialisation process developed at the end of the 18th century and early 19th century. This bronze monument is formed by a statue over a pedestal. The cubic-shaped plinth is decorated with images recalling scenes that the guest of honour experienced: mining exploitation, shipping companies and house building. Below the statue there are four human beings -a woman, a man and two children- depicting the inhabitants in a thankful attitude towards the businessman, making a flower offering. This is one of the main tribute monuments in Bizkaia, mainly due to its historical value.
