Arrasate-Mondragón was built in the Middle Ages and was an oval-shaped town. Due to the wars between different sides spread all over the territory, a wall protected the old part of town and some traces of it are still visible. In the past, there were five gates or entrances to gain access, but nowadays, there are only three left: Portalón, Zurgin Kantoia, which is the oldest one and Kontzezino. They would be opened and closed every morning and night. Apparently, in case of fire the doors were closed so that the inhabitants would help extinguishing it. Within the walled town, there are many artistic-historic monuments, such as the parish church of San Juan Bautista, Andikano-Loiola Palace, Bañez de Artazubiaga Palace and Okendo Palace.
