Start: Gernika
Arrival: Mundaka
Today we are going to discover Gernika, which is a true symbol of Basque culture. It is located in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. A visit to the Tree and Meeting House is a must, where the Basque Premier, known as the lehendakari is sworn in to office. Unfortunately, Gernika is also famous for having been bombed during the Spanish Civil War, by the German Condor Legion. Learn more about the events of that fateful day in the Peace Museum. We recommend paying a visit to the Itsasmendi wineries, whose Nº7 wine was the first txakoli to receive the Bacchus Gold award, organised by the Spanish Wine-Tasting Association. Visit its vineyards and taste this wine, which is unique to the Basque Country. It would be a mortal sin to leave Urdaibai without first visiting Mundaka, a charming village which houses a small and picturesque port, located at the mouth of the Gernika Ria. A few metres from the port, right on the ria, is the famous Mundaka left wave, which is considered to be one of the ten best in the world. Surfers from throughout the world come here to experience it for themselves.
